Why Diets Don’t Work

So you want to lose weight?  Good!  You are not alone.  You are apart of a HUGE tribe of people looking to drop a few pounds. The average american could stand to lose about 20lbs, to get to a healthier state. According to a recent Gallup Poll, nearly half of all Americans want to lose weight.  However, only about 20% of those people are actively trying to lose weight. Some having simply given up hope.  Why? Lost hope is in part due to the the fact that weight loss is challenging, but not impossible.

The people that are losing weight and keeping it off are doing it with the help of technology (food tracking app’s), eating fresh, home cooked food and joining a online support groups.  This is a mix of “old school” and “new school” methods of weight management.  Tracking what you eat has been around for a long time, but now we can do it through apps on our phones.  One method of weight loss that does not work is “going on a diet”.

Diet’s don’t work.  Over 95% of people who loss weight regain it over 3-5 years. This is because people treat diets as a phase in their life, and once this phase is over, then all of the healthy habits the person learned are simply discarded.  But, those who incorporate healthy lifestyle changes are likely to succeed at keeping the weight off.  These lifestyle changes include:

  1. Eating breakfast
  2. Engaging in high levels of physical activity
  3. Eating a diet that is low in calories and fat
  4. Self-monitoring weight on a regular basis
  5. Maintaining a consistent eating pattern
  6. Catching “slips” before they turn into larger regains.
  7. Initiating weight loss after a medical event may also help facilitate long-term weight control

Although weight management is challenging, don’t let it stop you from making small lifestyle changes today.  Here are some additional small, daily health habits for you to incorporate in your life.

Honestly, a lot of the success surrounding my ability to keep unwanted fat off has been trying, new and healthy food, trying new exercises and flat-out, trial and error.  I keep what works and discard what doesn’t.
